George Herbert Ballantine

4/16/1922 to 7/26/2016
George H. Ballantine was born in Kingston, New York. He lived the full life of an artist, singer, musician, road and bridge builder. U. S. Veteran and a family man. He attended Julliard School, and the New York Student Art league in NYC after serving his time in the US Army during WWII where he was stationed in Panama. He returned to Andes after the war and began his life as an artist.

George has left a legacy of amazing paintings of the Catskills and sculpture to include earth works. He built the Andes Park as a living memorial to the beauty of the Catskills. He built bridges and roads, moved dirt and rocks, and spent a lifetime honoring the beauty of nature. He painted up until his last days.

George started painting when he was eight years old. He always had a sketch book and camera by his side. He worked in construction so he could paint in the winters. He developed a personal relationship with the trees, rocks, and brooks of the Catskills. He painted his natural subjects as he would a person, evoking the different moods and feelings he undertook in the landscapes. This deep relationship between the artist and his beloved subjects reflects in the richness of his painting.

George Ballantine made his journey home on July 26, 2016 at the age of 93. He passed peacefully at home from his mountaintop in Andes, New York, embraced by the beauty of the hills and nature around him.

Please enjoy his work.
